GRID OF CHANGE currently has three main game modes: 8×8 Mode, Puzzle Mode and Grid Short Mode.
8×8 Mode #
8×8 Mode is a real-time PvP strategy mode where two players compete to control the board through smart piece placement and Skill usage.
Board Setup #
The match is played on an 8×8 board.
At the beginning of the match, 4 pieces are already placed in the center of the board, with 2 pieces belonging to each player.
Players take turns placing one piece on any valid position until the match ends.
Piece Placement Rules #
Place a piece to trap your opponent’s pieces between two of your own pieces. Any trapped pieces immediately become yours.
Lines may be formed horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
If a player has no valid move, the turn is passed to the opponent.
The match ends when the board is full or when neither player has a valid move.
The player controlling the most pieces at the end of the match wins.
Energy and Skills #
Before entering a match, players equip Skills to customize their strategy.
Each Skill consumes a certain amount of Energy when activated.
Energy is generated automatically during the match, allowing players to decide whether to spend it immediately or save it for more important moments.
Skills can be used to:
- Protect important positions
- Disrupt the opponent’s strategy
- Create tactical opportunities
- Change the board situation
- Support different playstyles
Choosing the right Skill at the right time is an important part of every match.
Random Skill System #
To encourage different strategies in every match, 8×8 Mode uses a combination of player-selected and randomly assigned Skills.
Each player enters a match with 4 Skill Slots, and each slot follows different selection rules:
Slot 1 – Player Selection
- Players may freely choose any Skill they own.
- If no Skill is selected, the system automatically assigns a random Skill.
Slot 2 – Selection or Random
- Players may manually choose a Skill only when Slot 2 Rental is active.
- Without an active rental, the system automatically assigns a random Skill when the match begins.
Slot 3 & Slot 4 – Random Selection
- These slots always receive randomly assigned Skills.
- Players cannot manually select Skills for these slots.
Because each match may provide a different Skill combination, players must adapt their strategy, make the best use of the Skills available, and adjust their gameplay throughout the match.
Puzzle Mode #
Puzzle Mode is a single-player strategy experience where players solve handcrafted board challenges.
Instead of competing against another player, each stage presents a specific objective that must be completed using limited resources.
Board Setup #
Each puzzle begins with a predefined board layout.
The number and position of pieces are different in every stage, creating unique situations that require different solutions.
Players must analyze the board carefully before making each move.
Piece Placement Rules #
Puzzle Mode follows the same core piece placement rules as 8×8 Mode.
Players place pieces on valid positions to capture opponent pieces and take control of more spaces on the board.
However, each puzzle has a specific objective. Completing a stage is not always about finishing with the most pieces.
Stage objectives may include:
- Reaching a target score
- Capturing specific pieces
- Controlling designated areas
- Completing the stage within a limited number of moves
- Solving a unique board challenge
Skills #
Many puzzle stages allow players to use Skills.
Each Skill has a limited number of uses during a stage. Because Skill usage is restricted, players need to choose carefully when and where to activate each Skill.
Using the right Skill at the right moment can be just as important as choosing the right move.
Special Puzzle Mechanics #
- Random Score Tiles: Random bonus tiles appear during the stage. Capture them to earn extra points and increase your chances of achieving a 3-Star clear.
- Fortified: Protects the piece on this tile from being captured for one turn, helping you secure important positions.
- Shockwave: When a piece on this tile is captured, a shockwave is released in a random direction, converting additional pieces along its path.
- Color Shift: Any piece placed on this tile immediately changes to your opponent’s color. Plan carefully before using it.
- Shifting Side: Random pieces from both players switch sides, creating an unpredictable board situation.
- Invisible Trap: Hidden traps remove any piece that lands on them. They disappear after a short time, so remembering their locations is essential.
- Clown Soldier: A special unit that teleports to a random tile every turn. When its countdown ends, it explodes and destroys all pieces within a 3×3 area.
- Thief Capture: Capture the Thief before you run out of moves. Once the Thief is completely surrounded, every piece on the board immediately becomes yours, instantly clearing the stage.
GRID Short Mode #
GRID SHORT is a fast-paced single-player mode where every round presents a new challenge.
Your objective is to catch the Thief and advance through as many waves as possible. Each wave is randomly generated, so no two runs are exactly the same.
The Thief is a special piece that moves freely around the board. As it moves, it can convert your pieces into your opponent’s pieces, making it harder to gain control of the board. To clear a wave, you must surround and capture the Thief before running out of Moves or Time. If either limit reaches zero, the run ends immediately.
The Thief is a special piece that moves freely around the board. Like an opponent’s piece, it can capture your pieces and turn them into your opponent’s pieces as it moves, making it increasingly difficult to control the board. To clear a wave, you must surround and capture the Thief before running out of Moves or Time. If either limit reaches zero, the run ends immediately. (Đoạn sau khi sửa)
Success in GRID SHORT depends on quick thinking, efficient piece placement, and making the best decision under pressure.
