Introducing GRID Spectate – Watch, learn, be Watched
GRID of Change officially introduces GRID Spectate, a new feature that allows users to watch other players compete live on GRID.
Currently, GRID Spectate is available for GRID 8×8.
In the future, GRID plans to expand this feature to GRID Short and Puzzle.
But GRID Spectate is not only about giving everyone a way to watch great matches.
GRID also wants skilled players – those who create matches worth watching – to receive value from their own ability.
1. How does GRID Spectate work?
When a user wants to Spectate another player’s match:
❖ Spectate Fee: 1 ELM per view
After paying the fee, the viewer can watch the match live through GRID Spectate.
Currently, ELM is the unit used to pay the Spectate Fee.
2. The player being watched also receives ELM
This is one of the most important parts of GRID Spectate.
Whenever GRID collects a Spectate Fee, 20% of the revenue from that view will be shared with the Host User – the player who is competing and being watched.
This means:
The more exciting your matches are, and the more people want to watch you, the more opportunities you have to receive ELM from those views.
A skilled player may attract viewers who want to:
❖ Learn how they think.
❖ Observe their strategies.
❖ See how they handle difficult situations.
❖ Learn from their matches.
Or simply…
Because they are so good that people enjoy watching them play.
GRID wants to create an environment where a player’s intelligence and skill are not represented only by rankings.
If you become a player that the community wants to watch, your matches themselves can also create value for you.
Revenue Sharing applies only to the Host User of the match being Spectated.
3. Why does GRID Spectate have a fee?
GRID Spectate uses system resources to deliver live match data to viewers.
If Spectate were completely free, the feature could be abused by users repeatedly entering and leaving matches without any real intention of watching, potentially wasting or overloading GRID’s system resources.
The 1 ELM per view fee is designed to:
❖ Reduce spam and abuse of the GRID Spectate system.
❖ Encourage Spectate to be used by people who genuinely want to watch matches.
❖ Create a revenue source that allows GRID to share part of the value back with the players being watched.
4. GRID Spectate is just getting started
GRID Spectate is currently being introduced first for GRID 8×8.
GRID plans to continue developing the feature so users can watch more types of matches in the future, including:
❖ GRID Short
❖ Puzzle
This is also an early step toward building a GRID of Change environment where people do not only compete, but can also watch, learn, and enjoy matches created by the community.
Playing well enough to win is one thing.
Playing so well that other people are willing to spend ELM just to watch you compete – that’s something else.
